Children's Policy
We love welcoming children into Dickens Yard Dental – whether it’s their very first check-up and they are getting used to the sights, sounds and smells of the practice, or they’re coming to see us with their first wobbly tooth. Our goal is to help kids feel calm, safe, and even a little bit excited about looking after their smiles.
To help us do that, we’ve put together a few friendly do’s and don’ts. Think of it as our guide to keeping everyone happy, healthy, and accident-free (including the grown-ups!).
Things We Do Love:
Bringing your toothbrush! If your child brings theirs, we’ll show them exactly how to brush like a pro.
Bringing a favourite teddy or toy for moral support – yes, they’re always welcome in the chair too!
Quiet entertainment – books, a small game or a device with headphones are great for keeping kids occupied while they wait.
Letting us know if your child is nervous – we’ll do our best to put them at ease. Got a favourite show or character? Tell us! Peppa, Spidey and Elsa are all welcome talking points here.
Staying calm and positive – kids take their cue from you, so we’ll keep things light and friendly (as always) to help create a reassuring vibe.
Things We’d Rather Avoid (for Safety & Sanity):
The Water Cooler Wiggle: Children shouldn’t use the water cooler on their own – one accidental spill and suddenly it’s a slip ‘n slide. If your child is thirsty, just ask one of our Front of House team.
Running in the practice – ever. We know they’ve got energy to burn, but no laps around the waiting room, please!
Feet on seats: Bum on seat, feet on floor. Acrobatics belong at gymnastics, not in reception.
Heavy doors are adult-only territory: Please don’t let children open or close the front doors – they’re heavier than they look!
Indoor voices, always: We totally understand if a child is upset or nervous – we’ve got patience and understanding by the bucketload. But general shouting or screaming (just for fun) isn’t welcome here.
Unattended children: All under-16s need to be with a responsible adult at all times – whether in the waiting room or surgery. If children are with you during your own appointment, they’ll need to stay with you (and it’s at the discretion of your clinician).
Toys & Distractions
If you’ve forgotten a toy or book, just ask – we might have something to lend out. But just a heads-up: any playtime must be supervised by you – we’ll handle the teeth, you handle the toys!
