Composite Bonding – what is it? 5 key benefits | Dickens Yard Dental Ealing

Composite bonding – what is it and how can it be life changing?

Want to refresh your smile? Composite bonding is a relatively simple technique that your dentist can use to transform your smile with ease.

What is composite bonding?

When you choose composite bonding, we can use a tooth-coloured composite resin to carefully shape, repair, or improve the colour and appearance of your teeth. This versatile material is applied directly to the tooth surface and skillfully moulded to achieve the desired shape and finish, allowing for precise, natural-looking results. Once the resin has been placed, it is hardened using a special curing light, which securely bonds the material to the tooth.

After the composite resin has fully hardened, we will refine the bonded area by trimming, shaping, and polishing it. This final stage ensures the resin blends seamlessly with your natural teeth in both colour and texture, creating a smooth, polished finish. The result is an enhanced smile that looks natural and feels comfortable, with improvements that are both subtle and effective.

What can it do for my smile?

Composite bonding is a versatile procedure that can be used in a variety of situations.

It can be used to:

  • Repair any minor damage to teeth (chips and cracks)
  • Fill gaps between teeth, for example, if you want to have a gap between your front teeth narrowed or closed
  • Reshape uneven edges of teeth
  • Fix tooth discolouration
  • To replace amalgam (metal) fillings

What are the benefits?
It can transform your smile in as little as a single visit to your dentist!

It’s a fast treatment option that can not only completely transform your smile, but also transform your confidence too! It can help to you to have a more natural-looking smile, especially if you want to replace existing metal fillings.

As composite is added to the teeth during this procedure, that means that there’s often no need for any drilling or removal of your natural tooth.

Composite bonding is also a much more affordable and less time-consuming option compared to treatments such as veneers. It doesn’t damage your natural smile, unlike the placement of dental crowns. In fact, if you combine composite bonding treatment with tooth whitening, you can often achieve a smile that looks completely different but still beautifully natural!

How long does it last?

Like natural teeth, composite bonding is not immune to everyday wear and tear and can gradually change over time. On average, composite bonding typically lasts between five and seven years, although its longevity can vary from person to person. Factors such as your diet, oral hygiene routine, and personal habits all play an important role in how long the bonding remains in good condition.

For instance, frequently eating hard or crunchy foods, biting on non-food items, or using your teeth to open packaging can place additional stress on the composite material. Habits such as clenching or grinding your teeth, particularly during sleep, can also cause the bonding to wear down or chip more quickly. In these cases, it is reasonable to expect that composite bonding may require maintenance, repair, or replacement a little sooner than average.

The plus side of this, however, is that composite bonding is easy to repair and replace when necessary!
